Diesel-powered cars are bigger in Europe and the rest of the world than in the United States, but why? R Tip: Use drop = FALSE with data.frames

(This article was first published on R – Win-Vector Blog , and kindly contributed to R-bloggers) Another R tip . Get in the habit of using drop = FALSE when indexing (using [ , ] on) data.frame s. Prince Rupert’s drops (img: Wikimedia Commons ) In R, single column data.frame s are often converted to vectors when manipulated. For example: d <- data.frame(x = seq_len(3)) print(d) #> x #> 1 1 #> 2 2 #> 3 3 # not a data frame! d[order(-d$x), ] #> [1] 3 2 1 We were merely trying to re-order the rows and the result was converted to a vector. This happened because the rules for [ , ] change if there is only one result column. This happens even if the there had been only one input column. Another example is: d[,] is also vector in this case. The issue is: if we are writing re-usable code we are often programming before we know complete contents of a variable or argument. For a data.frame named “ g ” supplied as an argument: g[vec, ] can be a d

Effective data analytics in Manufacturing

(This article was first published on Mango Solutions , and kindly contributed to R-bloggers) Data analytics is rapidly changing the face of manufacturing as we know it. At Mango, we’re seeing companies using their data effectively to gain an advantage over competitors. These companies are using data science to properly set up and control manufacturing For example, automatically adjusting parameters for specific parts/production lines to decrease wastage and meet demand. Research has shown that 68% of manufacturers were already investing in data science to achieve a range of improvements. This means that more than 30% of manufacturers still haven’t adopted a data-driven approach and are therefore not yet working leaner, smarter, improving yields and reducing costs for an increased bottom line. We know that manufacturing is an asset-intensive industry and companies need to move fast, be more innovative and work smart in order to be competitive. To remain ahead of the game,

Cartire Drive, A New Man’s Wear Watch With Past Eyes

(This article was first published on Cartier Replica Watches Sale , and kindly contributed to R-bloggers) This may be Cartier Replica , many of us are waiting. Earlier today, in fact, when CNN asked every hodinkee team member to pick and see, they really liked the performance of the day, and this is the new form of men’s wristwatches Cartier-driven – I chose. why? Because I’ve been eager to find the right fit for my modern man Cartier and my taste. Caliber chronographs are a step in the right direction, even more for caliber divers, but they are still a little cumbersome and a little bit of exercise. I mean, I have great sports watches from Rolex, Omega, and other countries. Why buy a Cartier sports watch? This is not Cartier for me, but the drive is exactly what Cartier is for me. It is beautiful, very delicate, it is masculine, and its movement is made indoors! Price? you will like it. Cartier Drive Replica is a vintage car inspired watch that is actually a brand new pr

Non Metric Space (Approximate) Library in R

(This article was first published on mlampros , and kindly contributed to R-bloggers) The nmslibR package is a wrapper of NMSLIB , which according to the authors “… is a similarity search library and a toolkit for evaluation of similarity search methods. The goal of the project is to create an effective and comprehensive toolkit for searching in generic non-metric spaces. Being comprehensive is important, because no single method is likely to be sufficient in all cases. Also note that exact solutions are hardly efficient in high dimensions and/or non-metric spaces. Hence, the main focus is on approximate methods”. I’ve searched for some time (before wrapping NMSLIB) for a nearest neighbor library which can work with high dimensional data and can scale with big datasets. I’ve already written a package for k-nearest-neighbor search ( KernelKnn ), however, it’s based on brute force and unfortunately, it requires a certain computation time if the data consists of many rows.
