Joe Biden Is Back. Here’s How He Did It.

COLUMBIA, S.C.—Joe Biden had taken blow after blow. The former vice president had come in fourth place in the debacle that was the Iowa caucus , and it looked like he might do the same, or worse, in New Hampshire. So before the results putting him in fifth place were announced, he fled, literally, to the state whose support he needed most: South Carolina. And tonight South Carolinians delivered Biden a decisive victory, with most of the major news networks projecting him as the winner as soon as polls closed. It is his first presidential-primary win in three runs for president over more than 30 years , one he hopes will prove his continued popularity with core Democratic constituencies and reinvigorate his flailing campaign. Biden is popular with black voters—he enjoyed roughly 50 percent of their support nationwide when he joined a crowded presidential field in April, according to CNN polls . So the question was never whether Biden could get black voters to support him, but rather

If anti-Bernie Democrats were serious, they’d unite around Joe Biden right now

Democrats opposed to Bernie Sanders want you to know they’re scared. The New York Times’ Lisa Lerer and Reid Epstein reported last Thursday that 84 of the 93 Democratic superdelegates they spoke with opposed giving the party’s nomination to Sanders if he wins a plurality, but not majority, of delegates in the primaries. “How you can spend four or five months hoping you don’t have to put a bumper sticker from that guy on your car,” former Sen. Chris Dodd told the paper. Anti-Bernie columnists like my colleague Jonathan Chait are expressing enthusiasm for a move by party elites to block Bernie . Exactly zero “frontline” Democratic members of the US House — those the party has designated as most vulnerable and in need of support in November — have endorsed Sanders with many endorsing moderates . But here’s the thing: The wor

Four winners and three losers in the South Carolina Democratic Primary

Joe Biden campaigns in Sumter, South Carolina, on February 28, 2020. | Scott Olson/Getty Images A good night for Biden, a bad one for Bloomberg South Carolina is the end of the beginning — and it turned out to be a big enough blowout to transform our understanding of the race to come into what really looks like a two-person race between Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. First came the traditional two — Iowa’s caucuses and New Hampshire’s “first-in-the-nation” primary. Then came Nevada, moved close to the front of the calendar to give Latino voters more voice in the process, and now, South Carolina, which serves a similar role but for the African-American electorate. None of these states are particularly large or rich in delegates (though South Carolina is the biggest of the four) but they matter because each one stands along on its own day — a beautiful unique snowflake that drives narratives and builds momentum. Collectively the opening four don’t determine the winner of a nominat

Joe Biden gets his first primary win in South Carolina

Joe Biden campaigns Raleigh, North Carolina, on February 29, 2020. | Gerry Broome/AP The former Vice President picked up a much-needed victory going into Super Tuesday. Joe Biden just got the win he’s been waiting for — and by a healthy margin, too. The former vice president is the projected winner of the South Carolina primary, according to our partners at DecisionDesk, who have him edging out both Sen. Bernie Sanders and billionaire activist Tom Steyer . The victory is a critical one for Biden, who’s built up a strong base among older black voters, and long looked to South Carolina as his so-called “firewall,” particularly after disappointing finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire. Given the margin of success that he’s seeing in the state thus far, Biden’s win puts him in a strong position going into Super Tuesday next week. Biden’s performance in South Carolina — the first state he’s won at this point — also infuses some much-needed energy into his flailing candidacy. The former

Former Vice President Joe Biden expects to win the South Carolina Democratic primary, and in the days leading up to that contest, his candidacy has received a number of significant boosts, from strong polling to endorsements. All of this has come just in time for the first contest in which the former vice president is a serious contender — and just ahead of Super Tuesday. After Tuesday’s debate in Charleston, South Carolina , Biden’s campaign raised $2 million in four days . More than half of that was brought in the day after the debate , when he raised more than $1.2 million. Unite the Country, a Biden super PAC, has also had successful days of fundraising of late, bringing in $2.5 million last Thursday — a haul that led to a last minute sev

Introduction Historically, only governments and large corporations have had access to quality satellite images. In recent years, satellite image datasets have become available to anyone with a computer and an internet connection. The quality, quantity, and precision of these datasets is continuously improving, and there are many free and commercial platforms at your disposal to acquire satellite images. On top of that, the prices of acquiring the images have fallen significantly, as well as the prices and availability of the tools that will allow you to analyze the images for machine learning and data science projects.  In this article, I hope to inspire you to start
