Subscribe to get this delivered to your inbox . BRYAN R. SMITH / AFP / GETTY In a normal year, July would signal a bit of relief, a kind of seventh-inning stretch for the nation. But this year’s will likely bring more of the same: Americans won’t be getting a vacation from this virus. Here’s what to consider on the eve of the new month: Coronavirus testing could break down again. Robinson Meyer and Alexis C. Madrigal warn of looming test shortages and delayed turnaround times for results, which would threaten the country’s ability to monitor and contain the virus. In cities, summer leisure will rely more and more on shared public spaces. “The summer of social distancing will also be one of social closeness between neighbors, illuminating divides of class, ethnicity, and place—as leisure has always done,” Spencer Kornhaber w

My book, Evidence-based software engineering: based on the publicly available data is now out on beta release ( pdf , and code+data ). The plan is for a three-month review, with the final version available in the shops in time for Christmas (I plan to get a few hundred printed, and made available on Amazon). The next few months will be spent responding to reader comments, and adding material from the remaining 20 odd datasets I have waiting to be analysed. You can either email me with any comments, or add an issue to the book’s Github page . While the content is very different from my original thoughts, 10-years ago, the original aim of discussing all the publicly available software engineering data has been ca

What Kind Of Data Do Stock APIs Provide

If you invest in the stock market, you’ve probably developed an array of strategies meant to support your financial well-being, and data surely figures in as a prominent part of that plan. Where do you get your data, though? Left to your own devices, it can take a great deal of work and organization to aggregate the necessary information to make smart trades. Luckily, with the help of one of today’s popular APIs, you don’t have to. API 101 An application programming interface (API) is a digital tool used for a variety of financial tasks, and that has particular value when dealing with the stock market – and there are many different APIs, as well as options for developing your own. When choosing a stock API, however, you’ll want to reflect on your own investment strategy, as well as the various functions embedded in the platform. Depending on your preferences, you’ll want to consider top stock market APIs like Alpha Vantage, Xignite, and Polygon, among others. The data available via

Our technology and digital infrastructure has never been more important. Newly formed remote data science teams need to maintain productivity and continue to drive effective stakeholder communication and business value, and the only way to achieve this is through appropriate infrastructure and well-defined ways of working. J ackie Wong, Jon Forster (Warwick) and Peter Smith have just published a paper in Statistics & Computing on bridge sampling bias and improvement by splitting. “… known to be asymptotically unbiased, bridge sampling technique produces biased estimates in practical usage for small to moderate sample sizes (…) the estimator yields positive bias that worsens with increasing distance between the two distributions. The second type of bias arises when the approximation density is determined from the posterior samples using the method of moments, resulting in a systematic underestimation of the normalizing constant.” Recall that bridge sampling is based on a double trick with two samples x and y from two (unnor

Embracing Variation and Accepting Uncertainty (my talk this Wed/Tues at a symposium on communicating uncertainty)

I’ll be speaking (virtually) at this conference in Australia on Wed 1 July (actually Tues 30 June in our time zone here): Embracing Variation and Accepting Uncertainty It is said that your most important collaborator is yourself in 6 months. Perhaps the best way to improve our communication of data uncertainty to others is to learn how to better communicate to ourselves. What does it mean to say to future-you: “I don’t know”? Or, even more challenging, “I know a little but I’m not completely sure”? We will discuss in the context of applications in drug testing, election forecasting, and the evaluation of scientific research. from Statistical Modeling, Causal Inference, and Social Science https://ift.tt/3ic1sfX via IFTTT

A new uptick in U.S. coronavirus cases raises more questions about his ability to guide the country in this moment. Below, four writers analyze the state of the coronavirus response, the state of the campaign, and the places where those efforts intersect: The White House botched its early pandemic response . If the National Transportation Safety Board investigated it like a plane crash, they’d find that “this was a journey straight into a mountainside, with countless missed opportunities to turn away,” James Fallows, a longtime aviator and Atlantic writer, concludes, having spoken with 30 experts for this piece.   And now Trump bears responsi

Trump’s Blank Vision for a Second Term

For a president who narrates his fleeting thoughts, Donald Trump has been conspicuously silent about one looming question: what he might do in a second term. There’s civic value, of course, in telling voters how he might dig out of the current economic calamity or end a pandemic that’s worsening by the day. But the emptiness of Trump’s message is an important reason his reelection prospects have soured. Trump has one imperative in the November election, really only one way to win. He needs to make the race a choice between himself and Joe Biden, rather than an up-or-down verdict on his own performance and persona. And he’s not doing that. Strip out the hyperbole and boasts, the theatrics and insults, and not much is left in Trump’s campaign messaging to guide the undecided voter who might wonder how the president’s second term would stack up to Biden’s first. This week, a friendly interviewer asked in the gentlest of terms what Trump has in mind for America if he wins. He gave no real

It is well-recognized that one of the virtues of the R language is the extensive tools it provides for working with distributions. Functions exist to generate random number draws, determine quantiles, and examine the probability density and cumulative distribution curves that describe each distribution. This toolbox gives one the ability to create simulated data sets for testing very easily. If you need a few random numbers from a Gaussian distribution then rnorm is your friend: rnorm(3) ## [1] -0.4311683 -0.1332959 -2.2088263 Imagine you were developing a new technique to determine if two methods of manufacturing widgets produced widgets of the same mass. 1 Even before the widget

Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is a great tool for a data analysis projects for a lot of reasons. If you have never heard of PCA, in simple words it does a linear transformation of your features using covariance or correlation. I will add a few links below if you want to know more about it. Some of the applications of PCA are dimensional reduction, feature analysis, data compression, anomaly detection, clustering and many more. The first time I learnt about PCA, it was not easy to understand and quite confusing. But, as I started to read about its applications in research papers, I started to get curious and try them all out. Now, I use it for most of my projects as a pre-processing step. I recently added this t
