Some Questions For Cuomo After Wednesday's Debate

Cynthia Nixon and Governor Andrew Cuomo faced off on Wednesday night for 60 white knuckled minutes and the results did not disappoint! Well, maybe it was a little disappointing that so much time in the only debate of the Democratic gubernatorial primary was spent on the topics of bridge renaming and teaching children about the menace of marijuana. But the answers the candidates gave—on transportation, on healthcare, on corporate personhood and Shakespeare and helicopters —were somewhat illuminating! Brooklyn-Queens Streetcar Route Will Now Be Shorter, Costlier

A new report on the Brooklyn Queens Connector or BQX—the streetcar that Mayor Bill de Blasio is apparently still determined to build—scales back the route by five miles, cutting out Sunset Park entirely, for a total of 11 miles of track. Despite the shortened proposed route, costs have crept up to $2.73 billion, from early estimates of $2.5 billion. And construction is not expected to begin until 2024. Tale Of Two Crashes: After Swift Response To Park Slope Tragedy, De Blasio Stays Silent On Bushwick Hit-And-Run

On June 24th, a hit-and-run driver fatally struck four-year-old Luz Gonzalez while pulling out of an illegal parking lot in Bushwick. Police eventually stopped the driver, Jeanette Maria, a few blocks away, but she was not arrested or charged. Emotional rallies and online petitions followed, with family members and neighbors demanding "Justice for Luz" and claiming that the driver was let off easy because her brother is rumored to be an NYPD sergeant. (That NYPD connection has not been confirmed.) [ more › ] Gothamist https://ift.tt/2C2BlXV August 30, 2018 at 09:30PM

New Woody Allen Film 'Shelved Indefinitely' By Amazon Studios

What reason would a for-profit company have to shelve a feature film starring Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Rebecca Hall, Jude Law, and Elle Fanning...aside from the fact that the director is Woody Allen, long-accused of having sexually abused his adoptive daughter, Dylan Farrow (but not the one he married )? While Amazon Studios isn't saying as much, they have nonetheless decided not to release A Rainy Day in New York , Allen's latest film which they reportedly bought for $25 million.       Paulie Gee's in Greenpoint makes some of the city's best pizza , but excruciating table waits and a notorious no-takeout policy means that it can be frustratingly difficult to actually eat there. Rain Dove Sent Asia Argento Texts To Police Because 'They Were Not Going To Follow Their Own Ethics'

Earlier this week, Rose McGowan released a detailed statement regarding recent allegations that Asia Argento sexually assaulted a former underage co-star. McGowan explained that the person she's dating, gender-nonconforming model and activist Rain Dove, was the one whose text messages with Argento—in which she seemingly admitted to having sex with Jimmy Bennett while he was underage—were leaked by TMZ. Dove has now issued their own statement explaining their role in all this: "When [Argento] made it clear that they were not going to be honest about their engagement, I turned in materials that may contribute towards an honest investigation. All victims deserve justice. Justice can rarely exist without honesty." [ more › ] Gothamist https://ift.tt/2LJ0ZjU August 30, 2018 at 07:52PM

Five Takeaways From The First & Only Cuomo-Nixon Debate

Governor Andrew Cuomo and challenger Cynthia Nixon sparred for an hour last night at Hofstra University on Long Island, where each candidate seemed determined to pack as much vitriol as they could into their only debate ahead of the Democratic primary on Thursday, September 13th. The acrimonious encounter featured Cuomo accusing Nixon of being a political neophyte who "lives in the world of fiction," and Nixon dismissing Cuomo as "a corrupt corporate Democrat" who stood up to Trump "about as well as he stood up to Putin.” Here's what stood out most from last night's clash (full video below): [ more › ] Gothamist https://ift.tt/2PMXSuN August 30, 2018 at 05:57PM

Drawing Spirograph curves in Python

I was looking back over an old blog post  and noticed some code in the comments that I had overlooked. Tom Pollard gives the following code for drawing Spirograph -like curves. import matplotlib.pyplot as plt from numpy import pi, exp, real, imag, linspace def spiro(t, r1, r2, r3): """ Create Spirograph curves made by one circle of radius r2 rolling around the inside (or outside) of another of radius r1. The pen is a distance r3 from the center of the first circle. """ return r3*exp(1j*t*(r1+r2)/r2) + (r1+r2)*exp(1j*t) def circle(t, r): return r * exp(1j*t) r1 = 1.0 r2 = 52.0/96.0 r3 = 42.0/96.0 ncycle = 13 # LCM(r1,r2)/r2 t = linspace(0, ncycle*2*pi, 1000) plt.plot(real(spiro(t, r1, r2, r3)), imag(spiro(t, r1, r2, r3))) plt.plot(real(circle(t, r1)), imag(circle(t, r1))) fig = plt.gcf() fig.gca().set_aspect('equal') plt.show() Tom points out that with the r parameters above, this produces the default curve o

Optimal amount of input

If you don’t get any outside input into your life, you’re literally an idiot, someone in your own little world. But if you get too much outside input, you become a bland cliche. I’ve written about this a couple times, and ran across a new post this morning from someone expressing a similar idea. I first wrote about this in a short post on noise removal . After talking about signal processing, I wax philosophical. This is a metaphor for life. If you only value your own opinion, you’re an idiot in the oldest sense of the word, someone in his or her own world. Your work may have a strong signal, but it also has a lot of noise. Getting even one outside opinion greatly cuts down on the noise. But it also cuts down on the signal to some extent. If you get too many opinions, the noise may be gone and the signal with it. Trying to please too many people leads to work that is offensively bland. I returned to this theme in The Opposite of an Idiot : An idiot lives only in his own world; t

How to Cite Packages

(This article was first published on Dominique Makowski , and kindly contributed to R-bloggers) What should I cite? How should I cite it? Previous blogposts Citing the packages, modules and softwares you used for your analysis is important , both from a reproducibility perspective (statistical routines are often implemented in different ways by different packages, which could explain slight discrepancies in the results. Saying " I did this using this function from that package version 1.2.3 is a way of protecting yourself by being clear about what you have found doing what you have done) but also for acknowledging the work and time that people spent creating tools for others (sometimes at the expense of their own research). That's great, but how to actually cite them? I used about 100 packages, should I cite them all ? What should I cite? Ideally, you should indeed cite all the packages that you used. However, it's not very diegetic. Therefore,

Fitting removal models with the detect R package

(This article was first published on Peter Solymos - R related posts , and kindly contributed to R-bloggers) In a paper recently published in the Condor , titled Evaluating time-removal models for estimating availability of boreal birds during point-count surveys: sample size requirements and model complexity , we assessed different ways of controlling for point-count duration in bird counts using data from the Boreal Avian Modelling Project . As the title indicates, the paper describes a cost-benefit analysis to make recommendations about when to use different types of the removal model. The paper is open access, so feel free to read the whole paper here ). In summary, we evaluated a conventional removal model and a finite mixture removal model, with and without covariates, for 152 bird species. We found that the probabilities of predicted availability under conventional and finite mixture models were very similar with respect to the range of probability values and the sh
