Where were you when the great snow squall swallowed the city back in January 2019? It feels like it was only 15 minutes ago that we were engulfed in a full-blown snow squall micro-blizzard that made New York City VANISH in a shroud of white. How young we were back then! How many dreams we had! It's now been over 30 minutes since the storm that rocked the city. Below, we take a fond look back at the historic event, and the people whose lives were forever changed. Today's Fight Over The Brooklyn Heights Promenade Recalls Its Embattled Origin Story

In addition to many fine apartment houses that would be affected, the general route under consideration would cut across Monroe Place and Pierrepont Street in a way that would probably involve the demolition of at least part of the brand-new Appellate Division Court House, one of the most imposing public buildings in the borough. This doesn't make sense. [ more › ] Gothamist http://bit.ly/2FZDk0p January 30, 2019 at 11:28PM

It's 'Groundhog Day' For NYCHA Residents Suffering Through Heat Outages During Arctic Blast

The bone-chilling polar vortex that has transformed much of the Midwest into a dangerous freeze box is now coming for New York City , with temperatures set to plummet tonight and remain in the single digits for much of the next two days. If you're an apartment-dwelling New Yorker whose home isn't sufficiently warm, the city's housing department has promised to hold your landlord accountable. But for the tens of thousands of NYCHA residents who've already gone without heat and hot water this winter, there's little option but to wait and see. Lawmakers Take Aim At The Hundreds Of Miles Of Scaffolding Around NYC

There are over 300 miles of scaffolding in this city. Those damp, dimly-lit plywood tunnels installed alongside construction sites are meant to keep construction materials from falling on pedestrians below. But sidewalk sheds can also be dangerous. Earlier this month, construction workers in Williamsburg were injured when a sidewalk shed gave way beneath them . Last summer, scaffolding in Brooklyn Heights fell outside a Starbucks , injuring three people below. And in 2017, a young woman suffered major spinal damage when scaffolding collapsed on her in SoHo. New Yorkers On Why They Put Up With Maddeningly Slow Buses: 'I Don't Have No Choice'

Andre Cuevas slumped over his phone in the back of the bus. His construction boots, coated in a thin layer of dust, straddled his helmet resting on the floor. Cuevas had opted that day to take the Bx19 bus along 145th Street to get to the 2 train after work, but only because he was particularly tired. Most of the time, he will walk instead. He says walking is faster. [ more › ] Gothamist http://bit.ly/2Rrgpwe January 30, 2019 at 09:45PM

NYC Weather Warning: Micro-Blizzard And 'Whiteout Conditions' Possible Today

I am going to guess that roughly 90 percent of the headlines you have seen today have something to do with the extreme cold sweeping much of the country, New York City absolutely included. The panic seems deserved. Yesterday we warned you that the impending ARCTIC BLAST will bring marrow-freezing wind chill and insidious black ice, and all of that still stands. Now, however, I bring you another exciting winter storm ingredient, courtesy of Notify NYC: whiteout conditions. Let's throw that in the mix, why the hell not. The Enduring Trauma Of The Noose

I remember feeling both enraged and terrified when I first heard the story of James Byrd, Jr. — the black man who was chained to the back of a pickup truck and dragged to his death by three avowed white supremacists in Jasper, Texas. The year was 1998 and at the time I lived alone in Brooklyn, a good 45 minutes from my office on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where I worked as a television producer for a talk show on PBS. Even as Byrd lived in the deep South, where deep-seated racism continued in open acts of violence and terror, I’d never heard of anything this horrific, and after that, I started looking over my shoulder more when I walked home from the subway. Cuomo Is Eating De Blasio's Lunch On Congestion Pricing

Governor Andrew Cuomo made congestion pricing a centerpiece of his budget presentation earlier this month , pledging to raise $15 billion for transit improvements by tolling vehicles crossing bridges into Manhattan or traveling below 60th Street in Manhattan. According to a recent poll , 52 percent of New York State residents support congestion pricing, and that number climbs even higher for those living in the city. Missing from the conversation: Mayor Bill de Blasio, who at first said he did not "believe" in congestion pricing , and now says that the idea to toll cars coming into his city has nothing to do with him. El Museo del Barrio Cancels Alejandro Jodorowsky Retrospective Following His Comments On Sexual Violence In 'El Topo'

East Harlem's El Museo del Barrio announced on Monday that it would be canning its forthcoming retrospective of the filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, slated to open at the end of next month. The cancellation, which ARTnews reports was incited by local community activists, comes at the heels of comments that Jodorowsky made about his 1970 film El Topo . In interviews at the time, Jodorowsky, who directed and acted in the film, spoke about a horrific scene of sexual violence against Mara Lorenzio, who also co-stars in El Topo , as having happened in reality.
